Love Food Festival 2016 in Abu Dhabi

Love Food Festival in Abu Dhabi was held last February 18-21 in Mushrif Central Park. My husband and I visited it on the first day. Since we were there early, the park was not crowded and the aroma while on our way to the caravans was so tempting!

There were many food caravans from London and some caravans were from here in UAE. I would like to try it all but since I'm on a budget and slightly sick, I couldn't indulge so much to everything.

Here are some photos from my visit.

It was a pity I couldn't have churros :( I have a cough so I avoided eating sweets.

Very unique!

I ordered chicken pad thai from Bangwok and it was yum! The serving was good for two :)

Grilled cheese from The Cheese Truck was one of my favorites. The taste? Heaven! ;)

This is Braco (British Tacos) from The Roadery is definitely delicious! One of my favorites since their last year's visit here in Abu Dhabi.

We enjoyed watching baking demo by French pâtissier and celebrity chef  the "Cake Boy" Eric Landlard.

The night was young but we left early because it was very cold. Although, I didn't had much food to try, I really enjoyed the night. Indeed, food festivals are my favorite. Good food, vibrant music, happy people.

Restaurant Review : Lemongrass Thai Restaurant

Thai food is one of my favorites in the culinary world. For me, you don’t have to be a food critic to know exactly what good Thai food is. Distinct balance of flavors - saltiness, sweetness, sourness, and spiciness, addition of herbs and variety of fresh ingredients are some of my basis when it comes to judging its quality.

My husband and I had a chance to visit Lemongrass Thai Restaurant in The Galleria Mall, Abu Dhabi. It was actually our first time to visit The Galleria Mall and I would say that it is definitely a luxurious one. Lemongrass is situated in the food court, but not just a typical food court, it was generally relaxed and calm, and the tables had plenty of room around each other. The layout and atmosphere is definitely impressive, but mostly we were looking for exceptionally good cooking.

The Lemongrass Thai Restaurant Brand was established in 2002.  The Galleria Mall is their 3rd branch in Abu Dhabi and is managed by Impact Commercial Enterprises. The dishes are prepared by Thai chefs and presented in a modern Asian environment.

Once we got near to the restaurant counter to place our order, the aroma in the air was an appetizing fusion of curry and coconuts. We grab the menu, one with huge photos and the simpler version. My husband enjoyed choosing based on the photos since he's not so familiar with just the names in the menu, which is quite helpful. I used the simpler menu with the description of each.

As we decided what to order, we approached the staff to further explain the ingredients in the dishes. She seems to be well trained and patiently discussed each one to us. She even asked what level of spiciness we like for our food. As our order has been placed, she gave us an alarm-disc which cues us when our order is ready for collection. Well, we didn't wait long; it was very impressive how quick they prepared our order.

Since it is a food court dining set-up, we had our orders all together in our table. We ordered non-vegetarian Lemongrass set for appetizer. It has vegetable spring rolls, marinated chicken covered in pandan leaf, prawn cake, glass noodle salad with minced chicken and chicken satay, served with assorted dips. The chicken satay is a bit dry for me. My personal favorite is the glass noodle salad; it has fresh taste, unlike the usual savoury flavor of noodles.

My husband chose Tom Yum Seafood for our soup. He liked Tom Yum since it has similarity to Filipino Sinigang with a twist. He originally wants it with just crabs and mussels, but when I placed the order, the staff reiterated to me that if I only want crabs and mussels, because it could be mix seafood, with squid, prawn, crab and mussels. I told my husband that we should try the mix seafood, so we agreed to have it . But when we got the order, we only found prawns in the soup. We were surprised, but decided not to ask about it since the soup is satisfying enough.

Goong Tod Kratiam (Wok-tossed prawn with garlic and pepper sauce) was best with their steamed jasmine rice. The flavors and textures were well balanced.

We also had Gaeng Kiew Wan Gai (Green curry with chicken, eggplant, chili and sweet basil). Unfortunately we ordered it mild, the dish is great, but I think that we would've enjoyed it more if it is a little spicy.

My usual dish whenever we’re in a Thai Restaurant is Pad Thai. So, I ordered Pad Thai Goong (Wok-fried rice noodles with prawns, bean sprout, tofu & chive serve in egg wrap. I love Pad Thai, and I was not disappointed with their version and the generous amount of serving.

We had Ruam Mit (Water chesnut rubie, palm seed, sweet corn and jackfruit in sweet coconut milk served with crushed ice) and Kao Niaw Mamuang (Sweet sticky rice with ripe mango) for dessert. Ruam Mit was new to us, but after we tried, it was very much like Filipino halo-halo, but instead of regular milk, they used coconut milk for more creamy taste.

My husband ordered mocktail – Tom Yam Yen (Kaffir lime leaves, lime wedges and chili topped with lemongrass juice). I guess he just picked something and didn't read what it contains. He was surprised to found slices of chilies in it. He didn't like it much, aside from the chilies, he found it bitter because of the lime leaves. I had a sipped and I think it is ok though. I had smoothie – Chiang Mai (Strawberry, mint and lime). It was very tasty, just perfect level of sweetness and refreshing.

My husband enjoyed the non-vegetarian platter and the stir-fried prawns. I was happy with the Pad Thai; aside from its good quality, the serving is huge. I also like the glass noodle salad, it was definitely new for me and I am looking forward in adding it to my recipe to-do list.

Our overall experience was indeed very good. The posh ambiance of the mall greatly contributes to the restaurant's appearance. We enjoy fantastically authentic Thai cuisine at very reasonable prices. Although there was a slight mistake in our order, the quality of the dishes didn't fail us. We will surely visit them again.

Restaurant Review : El Chico Mexican Restaurant

Who wouldn't love tacos??? Well, good news for authentic Mexican food lovers, El Chico Mexican Restaurant opened their branch last 23rd of January 2015 in World Trade Center Abu Dhabi.

My husband and I recently visited El Chico Mexican Restaurant and we were very much impressed with their hospitality and service. The front desk staff welcomed and politely assisted us to our table. He then introduced us to our table attendant for our order. While choosing from the menu, our attendant served us complimentary nachos with salsa. It took us a while to choose because everything seems very appetizing. So, we gave the attendant our order and enjoyed our nachos. Well, we didn't wait long because our order came in a jiffy.

The mall ambiance greatly matched the atmosphere of the restaurant and the set-up was quite spacious. They had plenty of customers that time; one large group of friends was celebrating birthday, on the other table was a family gathering and the rest were the usual group of diners. Nonetheless, the very attentive attendants efficiently managed to assist everyone.

Complimentary nachos with a little spicy salsa.

For me, eating in a Mexican restaurant won’t be complete if I haven’t tried their tacos. So, we ordered their revolutionary brisket tacos. Soft corn tortillas filled with beef brisket, cilantro, and cheese, topped with onions was definitely a great choice! My husband enjoyed these the most :)

My husband ordered see food platter – Battered shrimps, calamari and grilled fish fillet, served with chimichurri dip. He is not a fan of chimichurri dip so I just enjoyed it with my tacos.

I ordered from their classic combos of El Rancho – Grilled chicken breast on a bed of caramelized onions and green peppers, topped with pico de gallo, beef burrito with sour cream  and cheese enchilada with chili con carne,  all in one platter. Absolutely heavy dinner for me!

Indeed, it was a great foodie treat for us! Good food, bottomless iced-tea, exceptional service, great place. Totally recommendable.

Abu Dhabi Street Feast 2015

Abu Dhabi Food Festival held the Street Feast for the first time where local and international food caravans parked in the street of Abu Dhabi offering diverse range of delectable cuisines for reasonable prices. The street feast started on February 5-7 in Abu Dhabi Western region, February 12-14 in Al Ain and February 19-21 in Abu Dhabi Corniche. Food caravans from United Kingdom were the highlight of the event and crowds' main attraction specially for a gastronomic adventurer like me.

Aside from the food trucks, there were also cooking demos from renowned chefs. I missed Chef Andy Bates demo but quite lucky to watched Chef Jun Tanaka. He demonstrated a very simple and quick dish of ‘Herb Crusted Lamb’ which unfortunately my husband is not really a fan of lambs. Anyway, one thing that I’ve learned from Chef Jun, even before from his show in Food Network, is to always taste whatever you’re cooking, before and after adding-up extra condiments. I luckily had a photo with him after his demo :)

After watching cooking demo, my husband and I started to check what we could buy from all the food trucks since we have set a limit for our food adventure budget. So, we decided to have grilled cheese sandwich from The Cheese Truck – one of the best selling that day; sweet treat of Churros and Chocolate; and my personal favorite, wagyu beef cheek Braco (British Tacos) from The Roadery of Dan Shearman. We also tried Cucumber and Rose lemonade from Soft Drinks for Grown Ups.

I would say that the concept of Street Feast is definitely a breath of fresh air in the Emirates especially to food and nature lovers. Even sandstorm didn't hinder the crowd from visiting the event, just shows that the Street feast is a huge success.

Restaurant Review : The Filipino Kitchen Restaurant

TFKR was established in Abu Dhabi last 2012 and Chicken Inasal was their favorite main course. My husband and I heard about this restaurant late last year because of their boodle fight way of serving food. But since the minimum person to avail this package is 4, we were not able to go there and have a try. Only recently when my friends and I planned for a late dinner and we decided to try this.

We are all excited to try what The Filipino Kitchen Restaurant can offer us with their version of Boodle fight here in UAE.

First, you have to book a table at least a day before your date. You have several options for Boodle Fight packages available that I've posted below. We chose The General package which is good for 4-6 people worth AED199, that doesn't include drinks yet.

The Filipino Kitchen Restaurant is easy to locate in the heart of Abu Dhabi but parking is a bit difficult find. Inside the restaurant is a very homey Filipino ambience though it is not so spacious. The staff are all courteous and very helpful to us. We were seated in second floor which is a bit more spacious for a group of hungry customers. Only thing I didn't like much is that if the area is crowded, all voices and little noises are echoed everywhere. Otherwise the venue is OK.

Food serving was very fast. Though we ordered our boodle fight package in advance, we still added some more from their menu and they serve it almost in an instant.

The food on our package tasted very good. Good rice quality in definitely an excellent point. Though, personally I didn't find it appealing to serve Kare-kare for boodle fight. I think it didn't match the concept of the other dishes which were mainly grilled and stir-fried. The grilled chicken were very tasty, the sisig was ok, the kilawing tanigue was ok as well, the beefsteak and shrimps are very good , perfectly matched with ensaladang talong. We added beef tapa and it was excellent.

To sum up the our total experience, it was very much worth the try! We enjoyed the new experience and of course the good food.

After the fight! :)
